WHAT IS A MIRENA COIL

The mirena is, it is a small, T-shaped plastic device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It is a type of intrauterine device (IUD). The Mirena coil releases a low dose of the hormone levonorgestrel, which is a progestin. This hormone works by thickening the mucus in the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg. It also thins the lining of the uterus,  failure rate of less than 1%. It can be used for up to five years, so you don’t have to worry about taking a pill or changing a patch every day or week.

The Mirena coil can also be used to manage the symptoms of menopause. The progestin in the Mirena coil can help to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding, hot flashes, and night sweats. It can also help to prevent endometrial cancer.

The Mirena coil is a good option for women who are perimenopausal or menopausal and who are looking for a long-lasting, effective way to manage their symptoms.

Some women experience side effects from the Mirena coil, such as spotting, irregular periods, breast tenderness, and acne. These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own within a few months.

Levosert and Benilexa can also be used as the progesterone component of your HRT.

I have to say having fit thousands of coil, I can definitely now say I empathise with my patients who experience the side effects of the mirena. It is definitely a great method to protect our womb against endometrial cancer and would recommend it to all, just preserve with the initial symptoms if you can.
